DINNER SPEAKER:
David Binns on ABCs of ESOPs: Applications, Benefits and Cautions — Employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) are commonly used as a means of transitioning ownership of closely-held companies and for sharing the risks and rewards of ownership among a company's employees. Both a qualified employee benefit plan and a technique of corporate finance, ESOPs are tax-advantaged vehicles that offer a number of important benefits - and some potential risks - for growing companies. Learn how to determine whether an ESOP might be appropriate for your company or clients and how to take advantage of the potential benefits of ESOPs while avoiding the pitfalls.

David Binns serves as Chief Operating Officer and a member of the board of directors of Macfadden & Associates, Inc., a federal government contracting company based in Silver Spring, MD. Macfadden's more than 200 employee-owners provide a variety of specialized government services related to information technology, homeland security, program management and international disaster remediation. He previously served as Executive Director of The ESOP Association, the national trade association representing the interests of companies with Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) and professionals providing advisory services to ESOP companies. He is a published author and frequent speaker on issues related to employee ownership and enterprise development.

FORUM A - 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
FORUM A: Buy/Sell Agreements - A Perspective From 3 Viewpoints — Buy/Sell agreements are often overlooked business planning strategies that have the power to effect seamless transitions. Without them, business owners and their families may be subject to undue financial and emotional stress. As trusted advisors we need to ensure that all of our business clients have considered these agreements. Please join us as we hold a panel discussions with 3 of the advisors that are often involved in this area of planning - CPA, CLU and Attorney.

Sponsored by the Business Valuation and Litigation Support Services Committee.
FORUM B - 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.
FORUM B: IFRS Topic — With the move to adopt a single set of accounting standards for the world's capital markets, financial professionals feel like the accounting ground rules are changing. While change is inevitable, U.S. GAAP provides a strong foundation to understand IFRS.

Chris McGrath is the Academic Advisor for the Finance and Forensic Accounting programs at Georgetown's School of Continuing Studies. Chris has practiced accounting for over 20 years, with three years auditing multinational companies working out of Istanbul, Turkey. He has taught and advised on compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and International Standards of Auditing.

FORUM C & D - 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.
FORUM C: — The November pre-meeting forum for the Tax Committee will feature our local expert on the subject of "Risk Assessment in Tax engagements." Much attention in risk management is focused on attest engagements. But did you know that most claims filed against CPAs are related to TAX engagements? Arthur Auerbach, CPA, is a senior tax director for Goodman & Company in McLean, Va., specializing in tax consulting and financial planning for individuals and closely held businesses.
