He organizes an annual conference on diversity which brings together business practitioners and academic researchers and is a nationally known scholar on diversity in the workforce. FORUM A - 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
FORUM A: Fraud — The prosecutor noted that twice during the seven-year fraud, revenues and assets increased even though the number of facilities decreased. "And that's not a red flag to an auditor?" the prosecutor lamented to the jury, raising her hands in a sign of frustration. We've seen Enron, WorldCom and other past failures in which the public asked, "Where were the auditors?" We're now seeing Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, AIG, and who knows what next. Will auditors be partly to blame for these failures as well?

Professor Keith Jones of George Mason University has a research grant from NASD to study "Non-Financial Measures as a Predictor of Fraud". In Forum A on October 21st, Keith will present his findings which have significant implications for CPAs in public practice, industry and government. Sponsored by the Accounting and Auditing Committee.

Keith L. Jones graduated with a MAcc and BA in accounting from Brigham Young University in 1995. He worked for Deloitte & Touche as an auditor in the San Jose, CA office from 1995 to 1999. He earned his doctorate from the University of Arizona in 2004 and has worked for George Mason University for the past two years where he teaches a course in auditing. Keith's research interests include fraudulent financial reporting, earnings management, fraud theory, and ethics. His papers have been presented at numerous conferences including conferences at the American Accounting Association (both national and sectional) and The Internal Symposium of Audit Research.

Sponsored by the Accounting & Auditing Committee.
FORUM B - 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.
FORUM B: Tax Roundtable — The Tax Committee is currently planning a round-table discussion for the October pre-meeting forum. This format was well received last year, and gave us the opportunity to talk with other local tax practitioners about practical matters. Some of the tax issues to be discussed at the October forum include: the new partnership filing deadline, new Virginia pass-through entity withholding requirement, the Federal bailout and how this is affecting your clients, and tax preparation software.

If you have a topic that you would like to hear discussed among other practitioners, please email your suggestions to Beth Moffett emoffett@bsgpc.com or Monica Selmonosky, MSelmonosky@beersandcutler.com, co-chairs of the Tax Committee before October 17th. Sponsored by the Tax Committee.
FORUM C & D - 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.
FORUM C: Becoming a Financial Advisor — Jahan Jewayni, financial advisor with Merrill Lynch, Terry Jones financial advisor and area team leader for HD Vest, and Dan Smith, CPA formerly a financial advisor with AXA, and currently a wholesaler with Hartford will be on a panel on what is it like to be a financial advisor and CPA.

Sponsored by the Personal Financial Planning Committee.

FORUM D:[UPDATED] The Ideal Expert Witness: A Judge's Perspective — Judge Bob Wooldridge will explain from his extensive experience from the bench on what an ideal expert witness should do to properly render his/her opinion.
